In my small business, I'm constantly thinking about how to boost my bottom line — and you should be too. If you have a successful small business, or are just starting out, then you have to employ some sort of sales training in your organization.

The goal of every sales training session is not just to teach employees about selling techniques and principles, but also to actually help you increase your number of sales and improve your sales ratios. Unfortunately, most sales professionals gain knowledge and awareness from the sales training that they receive, but still fail to increase their bottom line results.

Techniques to Boost Sales

There are several methods to move beyond mere knowledge of sales techniques. All it takes is just a little practice and perseverance to be successful.

  • Tell yourself that you can succeed — In order to become a sales leader of any business, you must tell yourself over and over again that you can succeed. In sales, it is the attitude with which you go about doing your work that actually counts. If a sales professional acts like he or she is a pro at selling, then the sales ratios will always improve.
  • Repeat the technique until it becomes yours — While your employees are being taught new sales techniques, it isn't enough to just practice them on the job. They must practice them in until they are able to use them for every transaction.
  • Work smarter, not harder — Excellent sales results generally come from professionals who follow the principles faithfully. They might not work immediately, but they definitely will lighten the workload and give your business an edge.

By following these techniques, you will notice the dramatic change in your sales ratios — always for the better. So, start practicing today and see how they make a world of a difference to you as well as your company.

Protecting your business assets is one of your most important responsibilities as a small business owner. Without your assets, there is not business. Protecting your assets effectively boosts the economic growth and stability of your business in the following ways:

  • It acts as a shield to your business assets
  • Safeguards your possessions against creditor claims
  • Essential for the security of your company

Tips To Protect Your Business Assets

It is vital to protect your business assets. Here are some of the important ways that I've discovered will help you do just that:

  • Beneficial investment: Invest in insurance for your car or house. It helps to protect your property against loss (in addition to taking a load off your mind!) You can pay a certain amount of money to buy insurance policy that will be used in case of unavoidable circumstances such as accidents or fires. It is well worth the cost, even if you consider it to be expensive.
  • Consider different ways of asset protection: There are three main ways to protect your business assets; namely, wealth-segregation asset protection, liability limitation asset protection and insurance.
  • Wealth-segregation asset protection: There are a number of laws that can be used to segregate your wealth through asset protection. Wealth segregation enables you to protect your assets that creditors may seize if you run into financial difficulty. Wealth segregation helps the most in bankruptcy. By filing bankruptcy, you are protecting your assets from the claims of creditors.

When selecting methods for asset protection, try to select the one that can shield your property safely from any danger without incurring additional risk.

A content site is one of the most effective ways to advertise online. If you have a content site of your own, then you can drive traffic to the site by placing ads in the search engines. Your content site should be on the same topic as the product that you are trying to sell, and the traffic will be much more targeted.

People who are visiting your site are basically looking for information - and this means that they have an interest in that particular topic. So in order to be sure that your website traffic actually converts into paying customers, it is best to sell a product or service that is related to the content on your site.

Points To Remember

The content on your site should be completely original, as much as possible. If your website has content that is also on other sites, it will be viewed as duplicate content by the search engines and your website may be penalized (resulting in little to zero traffic). By making sure that the content is original, the search engines will send targeted traffic to your site without restrictions and your site rankings will also improve.

Do Your Homework

As with all advertising methods, you have to do your homework. In this case, you need to do keyword research to find out what keywords related to your product are being searched for and are in demand. If you have the right kind of products that are also related to the keywords and content on your website, you will have strong chances of them converting well.

A content site can be very helpful for advertising on the Internet. Once your site is built you will only need to add content on a regular basis to keep the site fresh and the search engines (and your customers!) coming.

One of the best strategies for growing my business is using networking opportunities. As a small business owner, you should never miss an opportunity to network — you never know when just one new contact can have a huge positive impact on your business' bottom line!

Networking Events

Contrary to popular belief, networking events are not business card dumpsters. In other words, don't go to networking events under the pretext of just passing out business cards.

The quality of new contacts is comparatively more important than the quantity. Attend networking events that attract people in your field of business. Don't limit your conversations just to those that can help you get more business. You need to connect with as many people as you can, because each person has their own network — one of which could potentially help your business in some area.

Here are a few guidelines that you should follow to ensure success during networking events:

  • Don't be shy at networking events! Instead, introduce yourself to lots of people and strike up conversations — if you don't get the ball rolling, who will?
  • Keep meetings short. Even if you are looking for quality, talk to many people. You need to meet as many people as you can in order to benefit from a few. You should also keep conversations short and to the point.
  • Networking events are the right time for giving “potentials” a peek into your business. The primary goal is building curiosity and excitement about your business. If you do this correctly, you'll notice that lots of people you meet at networking events will follow up with you long after the event is over.

In addition to the tips above, be approachable and be yourself. There's no better advertisement than that!

Employee Discipline Strategies

Every small business owner wants good employees, but unfortunately not all employees are good. There comes a time when you may have to deal with employees to correct inappropriate behavior.

Employee discipline is much more complicated than it seems.  Here are some steps that you need to take for avoiding both costly lawsuits and stress.

Tips For Disciplining Employees

  • Consistency from your side (as the employer) is very important. If you are an employer, then you will have to apply the same level of accountability to everyone. Make sure that your employees understand all company rules and policies.
  • You will have to keep accurate records. Whenever you are speaking to any employee about a specific work rule, make a note of it, mention the date, sign it and keep it in that employee's personnel folder. This will be helpful if that employee is ever terminated and the case ends up in court or arbitration.
  • Timing is very important — you will have to take quick action if a problem arises to prevent it from getting worse. It is a good idea to go over the rules again with the employee if an infraction has taken place.  Again, make sure you document all disciplinary conversations.
  • Conduct investigations by preparing a list designed at getting the truth. You can also interview suppliers, customers or other employees to get information.
  • Stick with the facts — you cannot rely on speculation or assumptions when it comes to employee discipline.

Disciplining employees is a necessary evil when you have a business.  By knowing what to do and when to do it, you can make your life as an employer much easier.

Gaining Client Confidence

Initially, when people start their business, they sometimes know zilch about sales and other effective business techniques — they literally have to sink or swim.  In no area is this more true than when it comes to dealing with customers.  After all, they're the backbone of your business.

If you are a small business owner, then gaining the confidence of your clients has to be at the top of your list of things to know.  Here are some tips for doing just that!

Know Your Product

You (and your employees, if you have any) have to know the details about your product or service. You cannot afford to look through instruction manuals when a customer is standing right in front of you. As the business owner, the onus is on you to read up on your industry before starting your business and take courses if necessary.  After you have the necessary knowledge, then you need to stay on top of changes in your industry so that your product or service will keep pace.

Don't forget your employees — make sure they know everything there is to know about your product, and hold regular meetings to make sure they stay updated on any changes.

Project Professionalism

This goes without saying.  You have to look the part, especially if you have a face-to-face business.  If your business is strictly online, then your website should portray professionalism, with a good navigational structure and uncluttered feel.

Build Relationships

Build friendly and steady relationships with your customers. If they pop in your place of business just to browse, ask how they are doing and make small talk. Avoid having any sales overtones in your conversation. Make the effort to really know your customers and call them by name.  That way, you will be sure to encourage a return visit.

Gaining the confidence of your customers isn't hard — and you'll maximize your profits as a result.

Internet Marketing Techniques

If you are an online business owner, then the perpetual question is ‘how do I get customers to my website?' Well, Internet marketing techniques basically serve two main purposes - driving targeted traffic to your site and converting that traffic into sales.

When it comes to websites, there are two types - sites that have tons of traffic and loads of unique visitors per day — and sites that are not as effective and have no traffic at all. You don't want your site to be in this last category.

Search Engine Marketing

To ensure that you get traffic to your website, it must be listed in the search engines through pay-per-click advertising or search engine optimization. Marketing via the search engines is, without a doubt, one of the most effective forms of Internet marketing promotion. The majority of internet users that seek information through the internet use the search engines. Search engine listings are extremely helpful when it comes to driving traffic to a website.

To ensure that traffic is targeted, a search engine marketing campaign should be designed carefully.

Keyword research is essential for determining how popular keyword phrases and keywords are among your target audience. This is important when it comes to designing an effective search engine marketing strategy.

Appropriate usage of keywords will increase your website's potential to receive targeted traffic. Titles of web pages and their descriptions, which show up in the search engines, also are equally responsible for getting internet users to click-through to your website to purchase your products or services.

Other than search engine marketing techniques, there are other Internet marketing techniques that also have the potential to drive qualified traffic to your website. These include:

  • Banner advertising
  • Link exchanges
  • Email marketing
  • Publishing articles
  • Starting your own affiliate program
  • Listing your website in portals and directories
  • Participating in newsgroups and online forums
  • Buying advertisements in Ezines

Getting your website seen by customers is half the battle. By using the Internet Marketing tips above, you will be well on your way to marketing success!

Why Your Business Should Be Blogging

Ask yourself - why are you reading this blog?

Today's online blogs have become one of the most popular methods of communication, especially for online businesses. There is a good reason for this.  First, blogs are instant; today's tech-savvy, high-speed, Internet-know-it-all citizens crave more information, fast. Aside from this, they also demand relevance and authenticity from all forms of media that they read, watch and listen to. This is why a blog is a good way for your company to connect with customers.

A blog is like an online journal. It makes it easier for your business to communicate your opinions, ideas, thoughts, events and announcements to both new and potential customers. Typically, blogs have the option of adding a ‘comments' section for each entry that you make. This way, your customers can give you feedback on what you have just posted.

Relatively speaking, blogs are easy to start and require very little or no overhead. Most of the successful business blogs on the Internet are usually run by entrepreneurs (like us!).

Benefits of Business Blogging

  • A blog will give you immediate feedback from your customers on products and services.
  • Your business will establish credibility if people see that your company responds to postings, questions or concerns, and if they see that your business is open to feedback from the outside.
  • Online blogs give you the opportunity to communicate news, events and information affordably, keeping larger expenses aside for traditional advertising.
  • Blogs help you reach your customers immediately and directly.

By creating a blog for your business, whether a stand alone blog or one on a page on your main website, you can keep in contact with current customers and attract new ones.

Low Cost Marketing Ideas

If you have a growing company, then you have to deal with the issues related to the marketing of your products and services. You can ask a marketing consultant to do this work for you, but they can cost a lot of money. So it is better to find some ways of marketing your business that won't run your business in the poorhouse!

Press Releases: You can write newsworthy press releases and draw the attention of readers (prospective customers) towards your company. Make sure that the press releases are short and to the point. They should have an opening phrase or sentence that is convincing and has the ability to hold readers' attention.

Search Engine Marketing: In today's world, it has become a necessity to have a website and to be listed in the search engines (MSN, Yahoo! and Google). More and more people are using the Internet to do everything from contacting friends to grocery shopping.  Your website hosting company should be reliable, so that prospective customers can easily access your site.  They can't do that if the site is down all the time.

Trade Shows: Rent some space at a trade show and hand out promotional materials to prospective clients. Make sure that you have prospects fill out a contact card with their information, so that you can contact them after the show.  Also make sure that they have your business card so that they can get in touch with you.

Direct Mail: Create a finely tuned list (email or print) of target customers and mail sales material to them directly.

Public Service: You can promote your company in a positive manner in the community by making donations to charities, sponsoring events, and holding events with other groups or local schools.

Marketing your business doesn't have to cost a fortune to be effective.

If you're a small business owner and have an Internet presence (as you should!), then you may or may not have heard of contextual advertising. But before you get started with this effective advertising medium, you need to know what you are getting into.

What Is Contextual Advertising?

Contextual advertising is experienced when advertisements based on the content available on a web page being viewed appears dynamically without any external prompting. This usually takes place in either a partially automated or fully automated manner. Contextual advertisements can lead to comparatively fewer conversions than pay-per-click (PPC) search engine advertisements because of timing problems. There is no real way to calculate how the arrival of the ads lines up with the readiness of potential customers to buy.

People who will be accessing your website through a PPC search tend to be further along the cycle of sales. This generally means that they will be drilling down with keywords that are more specific, actively searching for a business that sells the product they want.

Advantages

In the case of bad timing, most advertisers may consider contextual advertising to be a less effective advertising method if main intent behind it is to get quick returns. However, contextual search ads offer certain tangible advantages, provided you realize that there will be smaller conversions, at least initially.

For example, keywords that are there in contextual advertising generally cost less than keywords that are used in PPC searches. So, an ad campaign that is based on content does not cost more, which means that just a few conversions can result in a decent ROI (returns on investment).

You can't ignore the value of the exposure of your website and products in any online format, especially if it has pages that are rich in content. Visitors reading such content on the Internet are already interested in the topic, products or services. Therefore, there are more chances of them noticing your advertisement or taking note of your site as an avenue for exploring when they are ready to make a purchase.
